Idaho is the Pacific Northwest's open secret. The Sawtooth Mountains have over 50 peaks above 10,000 ft packed into a range about 40 miles long, plus close to 400 alpine lakes scattered through the wilderness. It's denser, more vertical, and emptier than anywhere else in the PNW. Stanley is the gateway town, population 116, one of the smallest incorporated cities in the state, with Ketchum and Sun Valley to the south as the resort-town counterpart. Then the Galena Summit hot springs corridor connecting them, a stretch of natural geothermal pools running along Highway 75 and the Salmon River.
Up north, Coeur d'Alene is a different Idaho entirely. Population right around 59,000, sitting on a 25-mile-long lake at the Washington border. Resort-town vibe, real food scene, the start of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes (a 73-mile paved bike path), and Lake Coeur d'Alene itself (consistently ranked one of the most beautiful lakes in the country). It is a solid 8 hours and about 420 miles from Stanley, up Highway 21 and Highway 55 through McCall, then US-95 the rest of the way. Do one or the other on a single trip. Trying to do both is how a vacation turns into a car trip.
The chapter has four areas: the Sawtooth National Recreation Area & Stanley (the headline), Sun Valley & Ketchum (the resort-town anchor and Galena Summit hot springs corridor), Coeur d'Alene & the Idaho Panhandle (the lake-and-bike-path north), and Hells Canyon & the Snake River (the deepest river gorge in North America, plus the rim drives). The big season note: most of Idaho's headline destinations are summer-only. The Sawtooths sit at 6,500-10,000+ ft, with snow on the high country late October through June. July through September is the prime window, with mid-July through Labor Day being the most-crowded weeks. Coeur d'Alene runs year-round with winter ski options.

Idaho is bigger than people think. The Sawtooths sit roughly in the middle, with Coeur d'Alene a full 8 hours north and Hells Canyon about 3 hours west. Pick a base, then day-trip locally.
The geography is worth knowing before you plan. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area is centered on Stanley, with Highway 75 (the Sawtooth Scenic Byway) running south through Galena Summit to Ketchum and Sun Valley (60 miles, about an hour). Coeur d'Alene is in the Idaho Panhandle near the Washington border, accessed via I-90 from Spokane (30 miles east). Hells Canyon sits along the Idaho-Oregon border west of Lewiston, with Riggins as the river-access gateway on the Idaho side. Hells Canyon Overlook is over on the Oregon rim, reached by paved Forest Road 39, and it is snowed shut from late October until around Memorial Day.
The most important rule for planning: don't try to do all of Idaho in one trip. The Sawtooths and Sun Valley pair naturally as a single trip (3-5 days). Coeur d'Alene is its own stand-alone trip (3-4 days), an 8-hour drive from Stanley, so it is almost always flown into separately via Spokane. Hells Canyon is a third separate trip, usually paired with the Wallowa Mountains in northeast Oregon.

Different rhythm than the Sawtooths.
The deepest river gorge in North America at 7,993 ft from rim to river. The Idaho-Oregon border canyon with whitewater rafting, jet boat tours, the Hells Canyon Overlook, and the Wild and Scenic Snake River. That 7,993 ft is measured from the summit of He Devil Peak, so no single viewpoint shows you all of it. Riggins is the gateway town on the Idaho side. The PNW canyon most travelers don't know exists.
This is essential for trip planning. The Sawtooths sit at 6,500-10,000+ ft elevation, with significant snow on the high country late October through June. Stanley itself often has snow on the ground through May. Highway 75 over Galena Summit (8,701 ft) is plowed year-round, and it still shuts for avalanche control, sometimes for days. It is the only road between Ketchum and Stanley, so a closure means the long way around. July through mid-September is the prime window for the Sawtooths, with all trails open, lakes thawed, and lodges in full swing.
Redfish Lake Lodge usually opens mid-to-late May and closes in early-to-mid October, and the marina runs the same window. Call them at 208-774-3536 rather than trusting the website, which has a habit of showing last season's dates. Sawtooth campgrounds open mid-May to mid-June depending on snow, and the booking window on Recreation.gov is generally 6 months out, though it varies by campground so check the Seasons and Fees tab on the one you want. Mid-July through Labor Day is the most-crowded period, with Stanley Lake and Redfish Lake reservations going fast.
Coeur d'Alene is year-round with winter skiing at Silver Mountain (35 miles east on I-90 at Kellogg, about 40 minutes) and Schweitzer (up at Sandpoint, closer to an hour and fifteen north, whatever the marketing says). Hells Canyon is generally May through October for river trips, year-round drivable on the rim roads.

Idaho scales from a 3-day Sawtooths weekend to a full week of mountains, lakes, and canyons. Pick the version that matches your time. Don't try to hit Coeur d'Alene AND the Sawtooths in one trip. They are 8 hours apart.
Day 1: Drive into Stanley from Boise (3 hours via Highway 21) or Sun Valley (about an hour via Highway 75 over Galena Summit). Check into Redfish Lake Lodge or Stanley camping. Day 2: Full Redfish Lake day, the boat shuttle to the inlet, the Bench Lakes Trail, sunset at the lake. Day 3: Sawtooth Lake Trail (10 mi to the headline alpine lake) or Stanley Lake. Day 4: Drive south via Galena Summit and stop at Sunbeam Hot Springs (free, primitive rock pools on the Salmon River 12 miles from Stanley, and the old CCC bathhouse there is a historic shell you look at, not soak in). Russian John is a 300-foot walk off Highway 75 north of Ketchum and it runs about 87°F, so it is a warm spring, more of a nice sit than a hot soak. Clothing is optional there. The Sawtooths-only weekend.
Add 2-3 days in Sun Valley. Days 1-3: Sawtooths as above. Day 4: Drive south to Sun Valley/Ketchum via Galena Summit (an hour straight through, longer with hot springs stops). Day 5: Bald Mountain hiking or biking (the Roundhouse Gondola runs Wednesday through Sunday only in summer 2026, and there is no lift to the summit this season while the Christmas Lift is rebuilt), the Hemingway memorial, dinner in Ketchum. Trail Creek Cabin is closed for the season and has always been a dinner spot anyway, so don't plan lunch around it. Day 6: Pioneer Cabin Trail or the Wood River Trail bike path. Day 7: Drive back to Boise (2.5 hrs) or fly out of Sun Valley (SUN airport). The full central-Idaho mountain trip.
Different trip entirely. Day 1: Fly into Spokane (GEG), then 40-50 minutes to Coeur d'Alene. The airport is west of Spokane, so you cross the whole city first. Day 2: Lake cruise, downtown walking, Tubbs Hill walk. Day 3: Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes bike day, or Silverwood Theme Park with kids. Silverwood is in Athol, 20 miles north on US-95, and Boulder Beach water park is included in the gate price. Worth knowing before you drive out: after Labor Day it is weekends only, and through October it turns into Scarywood at night with online-only tickets. Day 4: Heyburn State Park for a beach day. It is about an hour south at Plummer on the Chatcolet arm, and the drive goes over the plateau rather than along the water. Day 5: Spokane day before flying home. The Idaho Panhandle weekend.
The third Idaho trip. Day 1: Drive into Riggins (about 3 hrs from Boise) or fly into Lewiston. LWS is Delta Connection only, with daily hops to Salt Lake and Seattle, so if you fly anything else you are connecting through SLC or driving down from Spokane. Days 2-3: Half-day jet boat tour up the Snake River. Book ahead and ask about the passenger minimum, some outfitters need 12 people before a trip runs and a couple traveling alone can get bumped. Day hike on the Hells Canyon Reservoir trail. Day 4: Drive to Joseph, Oregon for the Wallowa Mountains. Give this one a real day. Joseph is only 45 miles from Riggins as the crow flies, but no road crosses the canyon, so it is 4 hours 45 minutes around through Lewiston and Clarkston. Joseph is also on Pacific time, an hour behind Riggins. Days 5-6: Wallowa Lake, Eagle Cap Wilderness day hikes, the Hells Canyon Scenic Loop. The cross-border canyon trip.

The Sawtooths are an hour from gas, two hours from a real grocery, and about three hours from the nearest Costco down in Boise. Pack a real cooler with food for the week. Cell service is spotty between Stanley and Ketchum, almost none on Highway 21 from Boise. Download offline maps before you head in.
Mosquitoes can be bad in early summer at Redfish Lake, the worst weeks are mid-June through mid-July. Bring real bug spray. Afternoons in July can hit 90°F at Stanley elevation but drop to 40°F at night. Pack layers. Wildfires change plans out here every single summer, and 2026 has been a heavy year. Check inciweb.wildfire.gov for fires, 511.idaho.gov for Idaho roads and TripCheck.com for the Oregon side, the week you go and again the morning you leave. Closures on this side of the state move faster than any guidebook.
